The Field Expedient "Cutdown Method" to Determine Storage Use On a Linux Machine

I recently noticed a concerning amount of disk space being used by a VM, and while I could have used Diskover to determine the source of this disk space utilization, deploying a Docker container isn’t exactly a field expedient method.

Instead, I used what I call “the cutdown method” to determine storage use. This method consists of running the following command:

sudo du -s /*

This will return the list of directories at the root / directory level. Once you identify the largest subdirectory, you then rerun the above command on that subdirectory. For example, if the above command shows that /var is using the largest amount of storage, then you rerun the command as follows:

sudo du -s /var/*

And so on, until you figure out where your storage is going.
